Font Bureau leader lifts the curtain on OpenType Variations Font for Google

Pioneering GX variations developer David Berlow says: “Far beyond sliders and movies, there is an expanse yet to be discovered.”

Following the mid-September announcement of OpenType v1.8 at ATypI in Warsaw, Google commissioned David Berlow and Font Bureau to develop a complex variations font with five axes. Although Berlow doesn’t typically show his typefaces until they’re ready for release, he’s departing from tradition in offering a sneak preview of Amstelvar, the sloped serif design requested by Dave Crossland, a program manager for the tech giant’s fonts division.

Find out more about the project and Berlow’s thought process behind developing a typeface in this advanced format, or explore Amstelvar on Github.
